Leaking boiler repair

Most boiler leaks come from the pressure relief valve, a circulator pump seal, a loose fitting or valve packing.

Updated 2026-10-26 · Reviewed against manufacturer guidance and U.S. DOE / CPSC safety information.

Where boiler leaks usually come from

Most boiler leaks come from the pressure relief valve, a circulator pump seal, a loose fitting or valve packing. Leaks from the boiler body itself, such as a cracked section or a corroded heat exchanger, are less common and more serious.

Dry everything with a towel, run the boiler, and watch where the first drop appears.

High-efficiency condensing boilers produce acidic condensate that drains through a trap and line, often to a neutralizer. A clogged trap can overflow and look like a leak.

In freezing weather, condensate lines that exit outdoors can freeze and shut the boiler down.

What to do now

  • Turn the boiler off if water is near wiring or controls
  • Put a pan or towels down and note the pressure gauge
  • Check whether the relief valve pipe is the source
  • Don't tighten fittings on a hot, pressurized system
  • Call a boiler technician if the leak continues

How a leak repair is done

  1. Trace the leak with the system cool and then hot.
  2. Relieve pressure and isolate the section if possible.
  3. Repair or replace the valve, seal, gasket or fitting.
  4. Refill, purge air and repressurize.
  5. Watch through several cycles to confirm it's dry.

Cracked sections and replacement

A crack in a cast-iron section or a corroded heat exchanger usually can't be repaired reliably. If your boiler is older, this is the point to compare replacement options. See the boiler cost guide.

Leak FAQs

Is a leaking boiler dangerous?

Water near electrical parts is a hazard, and a relief valve discharging means high pressure. Gas boilers with leaks that affect combustion should be shut down.

Can boiler leak sealer fix it?

Sealers can slow small pinhole leaks but can also clog valves and heat exchangers. A technician should decide if it's appropriate.
